AWS Recertification in 2026: Skill Builder vs Retaking the Exam

AWS's current recertification page presents two different outcomes. Renewal extends an active certification for three years, usually through the current exam, a qualifying higher-level exam, or the Cloud Practitioner Cloud Quest option. Maintenance through AWS Skill Builder extends a supported active certification for one year.

That difference matters more than the word recertification. A one-year maintenance path may suit someone who wants applied training and no exam appointment. A three-year renewal can make more sense when you are ready to validate the current exam blueprint or advance to a higher certification.

AWS announced the new path in open beta on June 23, 2026. An eligible certification must be active and within 90 days of expiration, and the learner needs an active AWS Skill Builder Individual or Team subscription. In Skill Builder, the learner selects Recertify and completes curated training and hands-on labs before the certification expires.

Associate-level maintenance requires 500 points and at least one practical activity. Professional-level maintenance requires 700 points and at least two practical activities. AWS says successful completion extends the certification by one year from the completion date and updates the AWS Certification account automatically.

At launch, AWS listed Solutions Architect – Associate, Developer – Associate, CloudOps Engineer – Associate, DevOps Engineer – Professional, and Solutions Architect – Professional. CloudOps Engineer maintenance can also maintain an active SysOps Administrator – Associate credential under AWS's published rules.

AWS said Data Engineer – Associate, Security – Specialty, and Machine Learning Engineer – Associate were planned for later in 2026. Treat that list as a roadmap rather than current eligibility until the official AWS recertification table or your Skill Builder account shows the option.

AWS Certified Cloud Practitioner is not part of the 500-point Associate maintenance beta. AWS currently offers Cloud Quest: Recertify Cloud Practitioner when an active Cloud Practitioner certification is within six months of expiration.

AWS lists the Cloud Quest option as free and says it extends the certification for three years. Cloud Practitioner holders can also renew by passing the current Cloud Practitioner exam, an Associate exam, or a Professional exam. Check the official recertification table before choosing because the eligibility window and result differ from Skill Builder maintenance.

Choose Skill Builder maintenance when your certification is supported, you are within the 90-day window, you already value the paid subscription, and applied labs are a better learning goal than a proctored exam. The trade-off is a one-year extension rather than three years.

Choose an exam renewal when you want a three-year extension, need a certification not supported by maintenance, or want a structured reason to revalidate the full current blueprint. A higher-level exam can be efficient when it advances your credential path and also renews an eligible lower-level certification.

Before selecting a path, open your AWS Certification account and record the exact expiration date. If Solutions Architect – Associate is within 90 days, check whether Recertify appears in Skill Builder. Compare the subscription and time needed for 500 points with the exam fee after any available 50% certification benefit.

If you choose the exam, study against the current AWS exam guide and use scenario practice to revisit secure design, resilience, performance, and cost optimization. If you choose maintenance, use the practical activities as real skill checks rather than treating points as a completion game.

First, confirm that the certification is active and record how many days remain. Second, check the current AWS table for eligible options. Third, compare the extension: one year for maintenance or three years for the applicable renewal paths. Fourth, include subscription, exam, and preparation costs rather than comparing labels alone.

Finally, choose the route that matches your next role. Someone continuing as an architect may benefit from current SAA scenario review or a Professional path. Someone who needs hands-on currency may get more immediate value from the Skill Builder labs. Recheck AWS's official page before acting because the maintenance program is still evolving.
