PMP vs CAPM
The short answer
Choose PMP if you meet PMI's experience requirements and want a credential that validates project leadership. Choose CAPM if you are earlier in your project career and need a foundation before leading larger work.
The wrong choice is usually not about ambition. It is about eligibility and readiness. PMP expects real project leadership context; CAPM is designed as a more entry-level project management certification.
Eligibility difference
For PMP, PMI lists experience paths that generally require 3 to 5 years of project leadership experience, plus 35 hours of project management education or an accepted equivalent. The exact path depends on education background.
For CAPM, PMI lists a secondary degree and at least 23 hours of project management education completed before the exam. That makes CAPM accessible to candidates who are building toward project leadership but do not yet meet PMP experience requirements.
Exam format difference
PMI lists the current PMP exam as 180 questions and 230 minutes. PMI lists CAPM as 150 questions and 180 minutes, with domains across fundamentals, predictive methods, agile frameworks, and business analysis.
The format difference reflects the role difference. CAPM checks foundation and vocabulary. PMP leans more heavily on judgment, leadership, tradeoffs, and professional project decision making.
Which should you take first
If you meet PMP eligibility and have enough experience to connect scenarios to real project work, PMP may be the better target. If you do not meet eligibility or feel lost in project management language, CAPM can be a strong first step.
A practical sequence is CAPM for foundation, then PMP after your experience and leadership responsibilities mature. Candidates who already lead projects may skip CAPM and go straight to PMP.
